These cardamom date energy balls need just 4 ingredients and are ready in 10 minutes! They’re a naturally sweet, no-bake, healthy snack for Ramadan or any time of year.
Speaking of Ramadan, these cashew date balls would be great to serve at Iftar parties. Or if you’re in a pinch, these sweet-and-savory goat cheese-stuffed dates would work!

WANT TO SAVE THIS RECIPE?
I had been wanting to develop a recipe that would mimic the flavors of mithai (a popular South Asian dessert made with milk and sugar), yet without the dairy and refined sugar. The opportunity arose when I was offered to do a Ramadan feature for Mashion a few years ago. It was an instant hit! I mean, what’s not to love? You have the flavors without the calories! Not to mention the fiber and healthy fats.
In fact, these date energy bites are one of my favorite healthy Ramadan desserts because they're quick, naturally sweet, and perfect after iftar.
And if you’re wondering what a typical South Asian/Pakistani Iftar spread looks like? Here’s a quick rundown: You would break your fast with one of these date balls, then snack on some chana chaat, and a baked pakora, drizzled with my no-sugar tamarind chutney, and finally, if you have some space left, perhaps enjoy chicken haleem for dinner!
What Do Date Energy Balls Taste Like?
These energy balls are soft and sweet with a creamy neutral taste thanks to the cashews. Flavored with warm cardamom and floral notes from the rose water. Mithai-loving foodies will not be dissappointed!

Ingredient Notes for Healthy Date Balls

Dates: I use Medjool dates. But any plump variety should work.
Cashews: I prefer raw cashews, as roasted cashews are often salted.
Cardamom: Because I always have cardamom pods in my spice cabinet, I like to grind my own, but you can use cardamom powder. Use 1/4 teaspoon if using pre-ground cardamom.
Rose water: This is different from extract. A little goes a long way.
How to Make Date Energy Balls

Step 1: Remove the skins and crush the cardamom seeds.

Step 2: Add the cashews and process them in short bursts.

Step 3: Till you get a grainy texture, like this.

Step 4: Next, add the crushed cardamom, rose water, and pitted and halved dates. Process till everything is fully incorporated.

Step 5: You will end up with a mixture like this.

Step 6: Take a handful at a time and roll the mix with your palms until you get a ping-pong-sized ball. Finish up the mixture.
Pro Tips
- Make sure to crush the cardamom seeds before adding them to the ground cashews. Cardamom seeds will not get crushed and evenly distributed when added in with the rest of the ingredients.
No-Bake Date Energy Balls FAQs
Yes, date energy balls are healthy when made with whole food ingredients. Dates are fiber-rich and contain complex carbs for energy. And cashews contain healthy fats and protein, which help keep you satiated. This makes these a healthy, balanced snack.
If your dates are soft and fresh, there is no need to pre-soak them. However, if they are hard, it helps to soak them in just boiled water for about 5-10 minutes to soften them before adding them to the processor. This helps blend them and gives the mixtures stickiness, so they bind better.
Yes, you can make nut-free date energy balls. I have experimented with pumpkin seeds and suspect sunflower seeds would work as well. The taste and texture will vary slightly, but they’ll still be naturally sweet and delicious.
Date energy balls last up to 2 weeks in an airtight container in the fridge.
Yes, you can freeze these date energy balls for up to 3 months in an airtight container or bag. Thaw them for 10-15 minutes before eating.
Yes! These date energy balls make an excellent snack or dessert for Ramadan. Dates provide energy after a day of fasting, and the cashews provide healthy fats and protein to keep you satiated. They are a simple, easy dessert for Iftar or a quick bite at suhoor.
