Why you should make these immunity shots
- Anti-inflammatory ingredients.
- Great for immune health.
- You control the strength of the shot. Add and subtract ingredients as per taste.
- Great to make in batches and meal prep friendly.
- Save money!
Ingredients
Ginger – Ginger contains the powerful compound Gingerol which is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits and the ability to fight infections. (source)
Turmeric – Turmeric contains the compound Curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties.
Citrus – Lemons and oranges for their vitamin C content.
Coconut water – Coconut water has naturally occurring electrolytes and has been shown to help fight mild illness but you can skip it for a more intense ginger-turmeric flavor.
Black pepper – Studies show that the absorption of Curcumin, the compound found in turmeric is greatly enhanced when combined with Piperine, (by 2000%!) the compound found in black pepper. (source)
How to make these immunity shots
- Peel and quarter the citrus and blend with coconut water, ginger root, turmeric root or powder, and black pepper. I used the powder because I had some fresh, hand-milled variety.
- Once the mixture is ready, strain over a clean bowl to get rid of the fiber and store it in a mason jar as I have in the video below, or individual shot bottles.
Variations
- If you prefer to reduce your fruit juice consumption, decrease or omit the orange and add more lemon.
- Make it more potent, increase the amount of ginger, and omit the coconut water altogether.
- Instead of black pepper, add cayenne. Cayenne contains capsaicin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Just one 45-gram chili pepper contains 72% of the daily value of vitamin C.
How to store
Store in an airtight jar or shot bottles for up to 5 days for maximum freshness.
