How I Cleared My Acne by Eating Right.

I have had acne-prone skin ever since I hit puberty and you’d think it would calm down as my 40’s neared. Unfortunately not. My skin situation spiraled out of control and my angst grew. I tried everything from over-the-counter skin products to consult a dermatologist. Nothing worked. The side effects of the products the dermatologist prescribed were enough to scare the living daylights out of me!

It wasn’t until I started reading up on healthy eating that I realized that I needed to revamp my diet if I wanted to achieve optimal health. In achieving that, I essentially achieved clearer, more glowing skin

Here are some ways I cleared my skin  and you can too:

Detox

Start your day with a cup of detox water.  Ginger, lemon, and turmeric are all powerful agents in flushing the body of toxins, reducing inflammation, and giving the skin its glow.

Eat a wholesome diet

Studies have shown that a diet low in sugar and high in fruits and vegetables has positive effects on your skin. Include fruits and vegetables of every color of the rainbow!

Purify your skin regimen

As important as what one is putting inside one’s body is what you are putting on it. Detox your skin products. Check the ingredients to see if there are any suspects e.g. Parabens, fragrances, and what are known as endocrine disruptors. These are chemicals that are used in many personal care products and when absorbed, interfere with the endocrine system and produce adverse effects on a person’s development, reproduction, and immune system. Switch to natural and chemical-free products. My favorite these days is the Acure brand of products available at Whole Foods.

Get a blood test to determine all is well on the inside

Unbeknownst to me, I had Hashimoto’s disease. This autoimmune disease is linked to acne as well as other skin issues. In treating the Hashimoto’s, I treated my acne! Most dermatologists tend to treat the symptoms i.e. acne, dryness, etc., without delving into the root cause of why it’s there in the first place.

Be patient

Patience is key. Unlike skin products that promise instant results, curing acne with diet is no overnight metamorphosis. One thing is for sure though, you won’t be pumping your body with all sorts of toxic chemicals!

I’ll check out Acure next time I’m at whole foods! Check out Pai skincare and green people. They’re both organic British brands and have amazing skincare and hair products.
