Ok so let me just start by saying that these chocolate muffins are just amazing! They have become a hot favorite in my home and I have two growing boys who can safely be described as chocoholics so you know anything sub par will just not cut it! The beauty however is that I get to sneak in some zucchini without them having a clue. Continue reading “Chocolate Zucchini Muffins”
There’s nothing more powerful than the death of a loved one to get you to wake up and question the meaning of life. A life with purpose is after all, the sure way to set and crush ones goals.
It was the death of my mother almost nine years ago that had me question what my purpose in life is. A tragedy often throws one towards spirituality and I was no different. I enrolled myself into Quran studies, being Muslim I knew that my faith talks a lot about life and the transient nature of it. It talks of action rather than going through life heedlessly and hoping for the best later. Because there is a later, it’s called the After Life. Continue reading “A Purposeful Life~ Lessons Learnt”
Last week I spoke to the youth at my middle schooler’s career day. It was not easy preparing a presentation that would engage a room full of teenagers. Health and wellness is the last thing on their minds and anyone who comes in and tells them to take it seriously is not going to be a friend. Despite the fact that these were great kids from good families, I did have a couple of snarky comments fly about and it wasn’t until I shared my story that I got their full attention and some good questions!
The very next day, the elementary school my younger one goes to was hosting their very own career day which I figured would be a cake walk after the one with the eight graders! I may have been a tad over confident because as tech savvy as I thought I was, my presentation for the little ones didn’t work! I winged it of course, and survived to tell the story but here are a few lessons I learnt from speaking to the young: Continue reading “Career Day 2018”
Ok so let’s talk goals….
Have you set your goals for the year yet? Well if you haven’t, consider making this year the year you take care of YOU. Yes, health and wellness is a big part of self-care and adding Spirulina to my diet is my health goal for 2018. Upping my intake of greens and regular exercise being on the list as well.
So have you ever heard of Spirulina? Well, it’s only the most talked about superfood out there these days! My introduction to this antioxidant bursting, energy boosting nutrient happened years ago but it wasn’t till just recently that I went out and bought myself a bottle. You see, I have been on a path to increase my intake of superfoods and I had put off this alien substance long enough. So out I went and bought the best variety out there. And that is absolutely important, that you ensure the variety you buy is pure and unadulterated. Continue reading “Health Goals, Spirulina+ A Green Smoothie Recipe”
So let’s talk about exercise shall we? How much of it do you get in a week? Is it something you prioritize or is it a once in a while activity?
I personally had always looked at exercise as a means to lose weight and get in shape. We are such a visual beings right? It had always been for vanity’s sake rather than to better my health. One workout here, another there. It was never something I committed to. Until….I entered my FOURTIES! Continue reading “Physical Activity- How Important Is It?”
I had no idea how good fermented foods are for gut health till I started looking into fixing my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Pickling has been in my family ever since I can remember. In fact it was somewhat of an event at my grandmother’s home. All the women in the family would gather and help. We would form an assembly line and each of us had a job. There was the rubbing gently of the vegetables to remove the moisture, my grandmother would be in charge of mixing the spices since she was an expert. There was the meticulous cleaning and sanitizing of the canning jars before everything was brought together and bottled up.
Then there was the waiting patiently for the Achaar or pickle to marinate. This is important because if you want to get the maximum flavor and, as I now know, the health benefits, you must wait. Continue reading “Pickling, a tradition that is good for your health!”

If you’ve been around my blog and social media you more than likely know that I recently enrolled in nutrition school. Yay!! A big step for me. It was something I had been contemplating for a while but I just couldn’t bring myself to commit to it. I guess I was waiting for that one last push, a sign that I was taking a step in the right direction. And then I came across Yasmin Essa’s interview on The Productive Muslim podcast. I knew it was a sign from God because she mentioned her alma mater as being the very school I was looking into! She seemed focused, humble and spiritually driven. Her desire to genuinely help people over come the global health epidemic was clear. I was sold! Continue reading “Towards A healthier Ramadan- An interview with Yasmin Essa of Wellness With Yasmin”
Here’s a great alternative to the age old favorite, Rooh Afza. I grew up consuming this drink but now that there is more awareness we know how the ingredients are a dangerous cocktail of disease causing agents. Continue reading “Watermelon Juice”
Ramadan is barely a month away and I am panicking. I have full plans of eating healthier this Ramadan and it really helped to demonstrate some healthier recipes to reenforce my resolve this past weekend. My dear friend Sameera hosted a talk and cooking demonstration in honor of the fast approaching month and I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of ladies on using this month as a means to jumpstart our road to a healthier lifestyle. After the talk we had fun making a couple of recipes. I offered these as alternatives to old, unhealthy favorites. Like Watermelon Juice in place of Rooh Afza and Granola Bites for sahoor.
